Mike and Ted's Excellent Adventure

By Steve Dulan, MCRGO Director

On Monday, July 31, I was privileged to be among a small group of people aboard the Mike Bouchard-Ted Nugent tour bus as the guest of MCRGO Executive Director Chuck Perricone and his wife Audrey, who were also in attendance. I boarded in Lansing after watching both Mike and Ted give brief speeches on the Capitol steps for a small but dedicated group of voters who chose to brave the 100 degree temperature long enough to listen and applaud and even laugh and cheer a few times.

Ted Nugent - Mike Bouchard - Chuck Perricone

As you are probably aware, Ted Nugent (a/k/a Uncle Ted, The Motor City Madman, The Whackmaster) is a very active author and speaker on behalf of hunting and gun rights. He is an avid hunter and shooter and was proud to tell me that he got "machine guns on VH1!" I've heard that he also plays the guitar a bit…

Mike Bouchard is the current Sheriff of Oakland County, former member of the Michigan House of Representatives, and the Michigan Senate, and a candidate for the Republican nomination for the US Senate. He has earned an A+ rating and an endorsement from the MCRGO-PAC.

Chuck - Mike - Ted - Audrey - Steve Dulan

As we traveled from Lansing to Kalamazoo late Monday afternoon, I heard about how the day had begun for Mike and Ted in the U.P. The long travel and the heat had not dampened their enthusiasm. Both men did press interviews during the fairly short bus trip and still found time to talk to those of us who were along for the ride.

I took the opportunity to talk about guns with both Mike and Ted. We talked about law and public policy at the state and federal levels, as well as the more fun topics of hunting and competitive shooting. We talked about law enforcement issues and what kind of hardware we each prefer for various tasks.

As a lifelong hunter, former US Army Infantry Sergeant, current Military Rifle Instructor for the US Army, competitive shooter (I spent the two days prior to the bus ride shooting at Camp Perry) and adjunct professor of firearms law at the Thomas Cooley Law School, I found both men to be well-informed on the issues that matter to gun owners the most. They both expressed support for gun rights and impatience with those who blame guns, and law abiding gun owners for society's problems. I watched Mike Bouchard's eyes light up when we spoke of "an afternoon at the range with the guys." He's a shooter like us.

When we got to Kalamazoo, I thought about how good ideas bear repeating as I watched both men give speeches that were essentially the same as the ones that they had given in Lansing. The crowd was a little larger (there was a shade tent and free food and cold drinks at the rally for Rep. Jack Hoogendyke that we were attending), the temperature was just as hellish, and the reactions of the crowd were similar.

Both Mike and Ted spoke of making Michigan, and the United States, better by emphasizing personal responsibility. These guys were still energetic and passionate about their message even after a dozen hours and hundreds of miles of travel by plane and bus on a 100-degree day! It must be because they believe in the message. I do also. I'll be voting for Mike Bouchard on Tuesday, August 8th. I hope you will too.
